International Leadership Skills Training Programme

The not-for-profit organisation Altemus is pleased to announce an open competition for its Leadership Skills Training Programme (Level I - Foundational Training). This programme offers young people from emerging democracies and developing countries an opportunity to:
- Discover and develop their leadership potential;
- Meet with like-minded peers from around the world;
- Gain experience and confidence leading in a community service project in their home communities; and,
- Receive invaluable personal and career coaching.
Program Description
The Altemus programme is comprised of 3 parts:
I. The first is a 3 week residential training in the following core leadership skills:
- Self-understanding
- Visioning, goal-setting and planning
- Communication skills
- Building and leading a team
- Project Management
II. The second part is the leadership practicum. Participants apply their newly acquired knowledge, skills d competencies to design and implement a service project for the marginalised/ poor in their home communities. They work as volunteers devoting hours/week for a minimum of 6 months. Their projects are monitored and evaluated by experts in the field.
III. Upon completing their community service projects participants reunite for the third and final session to:
- Share their project experiences, lessons-learned and best practices; and,
- Obtain one-on-one coaching on writing an effective Curriculum Vitae and preparing for a job interview; and,
- Celebrate their accomplishments!
All participants who complete Part I, II & III receive a certificate of completion and are eligible for a reference letter. Alumni of Level 1 also qualify for the ALTP (Level 2 – Advanced Training).
Methodology
The Altemus Leadership Training Program combines theory and practice. It is highly participatory and interactive. The methodology used includes brief theoretical lectures, group discussions, role-playing, case studies, team activities, problem-solving exercises, self-assessment, peer feedback, one-on-one coaching, experiential learning and community service projects. By placing learners in unique intercultural and physical environments, we challenge their minds, bodies and souls.
Trainers
Altemus trainers and coaches are highly qualified and seasoned professionals. They come from different countries and disciplines/fields (e.g. academia, business, psychology, journalism, social work, mediation, nursing, and sports).
Who Can Apply
To be eligible for the training you must:
- Be a national and resident of an emerging democracy or developing country;
- Be 20 - 26 years old;
- Be highly proficient in English;
- Have considerable & genuine volunteer experience;
- Be healthy and capable of demanding physical activity; and,
- Be motivated, able and committed to completing the entire training (Parts I, II, III).
Cost of Training
Altemus is an independent, not-for-profit organisation. We receive limited external support. Our trainers, facilitators and staff are all volunteers and donate their time and expertise without pay. We therefore ask participants to make a contribution towards the costs of their food and lodging (20 €/ day). The training itself, educational materials, social activities and T-shirt are provided by Altemus free of charge. Participants are responsible for covering their own transportation costs (to and from the training Part I and III), visa fees and medical insurance premiums. We encourage applicants to approach sponsors as early as possible. Altemus provides scholarships only to genuinely marginalised youth. For more information contact us by email.
Selection Procedure

A committee comprised of trainers, leadership experts and alumni review all applications.
Interviews – April 1- 14, 2012
Applicants selected are contacted and interviewed.
Successful Applicants Notified - April 23 - 30, 2012
